Being the most-loved President in American history, John F. Kennedy is remembered not only for his dedication to the office of the President but also his desire to win the hearts and stir the hope of the American people. Through the years many items that he owned personally, or gave away as gifts, have become part of both public and private collections across the U.S.
Great weight is given to a President’s eyeglasses (a.k.a. reading glasses) because they give some bearing of what kind of life that particular President lived, and to an extent, some of the things that were important to him in the way he saw the world. Due to the meticulous care in locating John F. Kennedy’s eyeglasses, they have been located by a private collector in the United States, who eventually acquired, additionally, the eyeglasses of the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy and the late Ted Kennedy as well.
Retired U.S. Secret Service agent, and once inspector Floyd Boring(1915 – 2008), carefully documented and stored away the John F. Kennedy’s eyeglasses for safekeeping. Boring was the Secret Service’s inspector directly charged with heading up the White House detail for Kennedy during his time in office. Not so many years after Kennedy’s assassination, both the collector and inspector Boring meticulously put together more detailed written provenance on the stationery of the US Secret Service. The provenance was prepared by, and signed by, Inspector Floyd Boring, at the time of relinquishment.
Floyd played a critical role in attending to the Kennedy’s needs and necessities throughout his time in office. The reason that Floyd Boring was often in possession of these eyeglasses, was primarily because the President did not like his pockets encumbered with 3D items. Accordingly, Floyd Boring not only carried his eyeglasses but his spending cash as well. This gave the president In fact, Inspector Boring would sit next to the President during Mass and slip him a $100.00 bill to be placed in the collection plate. Later that same day Boring would appear in the office of Evelyn Lincoln, the President’s secretary, and he would be reimbursed one-hundred dollars out of petty cash.
Today, the prescription eyeglasses of John F. Kennedy are handsomely and archivally framed. The framing of these Kennedy eyeglasses is impressive. All framing for these eyeglasses owned by the current collector were done by Rick Badwey of Showcase Portfolios located in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia.
