How to Clean Contact Lenses Properly

Contact lenses are a wonderful invention, allowing people with impaired vision to regain that sharpness without having to wear, large, cumbersome glasses. However, because they sit directly on your eye, they are a very real threat to your health if they are not treated properly.

Our eyes are very delicate organs, and can easily be irritated, infected, or permanently damaged. Wearing contact lenses only increases this risk, because if they are not properly cleaned then they may be introducing bacteria directly onto your eye, greatly increasing your chances of getting an infection.

Therefore it is essential that you take care when cleaning your contact lenses, and follow a strict regime every day.

First of all, make sure that your hands are completely clean. Wash them thoroughly with soap, but make sure to wash all of the soap off, as it can cause irritation if any gets in your eye.

Next, carefully remove your lenses and place them on a clean surface where they are unlikely to be knocked off. Take your lens storage case and fill it with contact lens solution that is appropriate for the type of lenses you wear.

Clean each lens by placing it in your palm, adding a few drops of solution, and gently running it, ensuring you reach all areas of the lens.

Use a few more drops of solution to wash the lens before putting it in the storage case and repeating with the other one.

Finally, leave your lenses for at least 4 hours, but preferably overnight, so that they can be completely cleaned and disinfected by the solution.

This process will leave your lenses sparkling and ready for you to use safely the next day.
